Quick Catch Up....

So after the last post, I had two weekends with not two much going on. The first weekend, a good friend of mine here lost someone back home, so me and the girls put all plans on hold to be there for her. The following weekend, we had a farewell party for Matt on the Friday night. We knew we couldn't afford anything fancy, so decided to be as lame as possible with party hats, kids games, leis and of course some vodka in water bottles haha. Then Saturday morning Frannie left on her one month vacation, and on the Monday, Matt moved to a family in Minnesota. Frannie is having her vacation before the end of her work time. She went to Chicago, Las Vegas, San Diego and Los Angeles, she gets back this friday and then has 3 more weeks work before she finishes aupairing and moves back to Germany! So sad!

I'm in a New York state of mind...

Well I've definitly had New York on my mind this weekend! Not only was I in the city both Saturday and Sunday but I also finally made my mind up about whether or not I was staying for another 6 months, and have decided that yes I will! I am so excited about my decision and the prospect of spending another 6 months in this beautiful and amazing, everchanging city!

Saturday I went in by myself, to the International Centre for Photography, they were having an exhibition of a famous fashion photographer's work from the 40s through to the 2000s. It was amazing work, and although I was disappointed that the centre was only 2 floors, and there wasn't more, it was a lovely afternoon! I also wondered up to the Museum of Modern Art (or MoMA) but didn't go in as it was closing in an hour, and the entry is $20). I instead headed back to westchester, and spent the night (and the early hours of the morning) at the river with Sarah, Steph and Matt, giggling up a storm as usual.

The next morning, I took an early train into the city with Matt, and we met Frannie at grand central. We subwayed down to the World Trade Centre site because Matt wanted to get some official merchandise. There's a great big space in the middle of all these buildings, and even without knowing, you would have had a sense that something was missing from that space. They are slowly building the new, freedom tower, so we saw them working on that. They had a WTC tribute museum but we didn't have time to go in because we had to be back in midtown (WTC is lower manhattan) at central park for Matt's LCC meeting. So we subwayed up to Strawberry Fields, Central Park where we met up with Sarah and Steph and the LCC group. After lunch, photos and general lazying about we decided to head to 5th avenue (minus Frannie who had to work), as Sarah wanted to get a teddy bear from the famous toy store FAO Schwartz (where Tom Hanks plays the big keyboard in the movie Big). Since I had already been there, we split up and the girls explored FAO and Matt and I headed down 5th to Best Buy (pretty much like JBHIFI even has a similar logo lol) to get me a camera! We met back up for some naughty spending at clothing store H&M before heading back to westchester. We ate at Sarah's for the second night running (yummy and easy way to save, dinner at host homes!) and met up again with Frannie to see the latest installment of Harry Potter. I'm not a fan but it was pretty good. Home sweet home at about 130, with my head hitting the pillow at about 3am after staying up for a late night online chat!!

Red, White and Blue (not just american colours, but aussie too!)

During the day on saturday (4th july), me, sarah and stephanie decided to get a little pampered and got our hair cut and then went home to dye our hair. We lazed around most of the day until about 6 when Steph and I (sarah was working) headed over to Alissa's for a 4th of July weekend. I had really wanted to go into the city to see the fireworks, but the girls were keen on a quiter night, so I had no one to go with. I had lots of fun at the bbq, though! We played back yard cricket (which I've actually enever played before and was quite fun) and guitar hero (i'm not as good as when i left oz but still pretty ok!) and renamed it 'Australia Day 2'! We even wore our aussie hats for a bit and got out some aussie flags, haha. The next day Sarah, Steph, Frannie and I got the train into New York for a good old fashioned picnic in central park! We got some lovely fresh summer fruits and salads, and found a shade covered rock to eat on. Then we decided to explore the park - we rode the carousel, walked literary path, saw bethesda fountain, people riding canoes in the lake, kids playing with remote control sailboats in the pond, saw the alice in wonderland statue, climbed to belvedere castle, walked through shakespeares garden and past the swedish marionette cottage. It was all stuff I've done 3 times before, but was so much more fun with these girls, who hadn't seen any of it!! One thing we did stumble upon, which I had been searching for all 3 of the other times I had been here, was the Hans Christian Anderson statue! I was so excited when we turned a corner and it was there! After the park, we did a quick breeze through the museum of natural history, before heading back to westchester for dinner at one of our fav chain restaurants, the cheesecake factory.

A Lady Gaga weekend (i wanna take a ride on your disco stick/poker face)

So again, I have fallen a little bit behind in the blogs, but at the moment I am stranded at a Lake House in Massachusetts, so I have time to catch up on the last few weekends.
The weekend after Silverbay, Steph & Sarah threw a cocktail poker party on Saturday night. So Sarah, Steph, Frannie, Matt & I got all dressed up...and had no where to go! hehe. Basically a fun excuse to dress up, take some photos, drink some cocktails and play some poker; we definitly had a lot of fun. We had an abundance of food and alcohol (jimmy, vodka, midori, bacardi, beer, cocktail mixers...) and Sarah and I ended up getting quite drunk (her more so then me, although I did fall down a flight of stairs!) and we all headed to be about 2am. It was such a great night and I had so much fun.

The next morning however, was not the most fun! Trying to get four partially hungover/partially still drunk girls out of bed and ready to make 10am train...not the best idea! We eventually made it onto the 11am train, all dressed up, ready for a day in the city - watching the gay pride parade in greenwich village. Steph and I had made our own custom singlets, with 'Pride 09' on the front of both of them; then I had 'all you need is love' on the front too and Steph had 'I wanna take a ride on your disco stick' from the Lady Gaga song, on her back. The back of Steph's singlet definitly got a lot of comments and some photos! When we got to the village, we went into a nearby party store to grab flags (Frannie opted for a rainbow feather boa) and found a perfect spot to watch the parade. It was right at a corner section, so we got to see the parade come down one street, and go down another, getting a longer view, and we surprisingly didn't have many people on our side of the street, which meant everyone wasn't uncomfortably squashed together! I had slip slop slapped before coming to the parade, but I did forget to put some on my back and the girls forgot theirs all together so after standing four hours in the hot hot sun, we were all ridiculously fried. My black beret was like a beaker for heat, so I took that off and tried to hide under my flag as some sort of hat! I think it was about an hour, an hour and a half after we arrived that the parade actually started, because where we were was about 1/2 way down the parade route. The first group was people on bikes, which was then followed by either groups of organizations, companies or people and some floats as well. Alot of floats were playing Michael Jackson, and all floats, groups and parade watchers were full of fantastic energy during the entire parade. Screaming, yelling, cheering, dancing, singing, applausing and supporting! The parade hadn't ended at 4ish, when we decided to leave before fainting amongst the crowd, but it was definitly one of the hottest days this summer and it was too much to be in the sun that long. We had seen most of the parade, and had been their through lunch, so we headed off into the village to find a nice little restaurant to eat at. We had some Italian, before finding a random stoop to sit on for the remainder of the afternoon before eventually getting back into Westchester at 8ish.

Silverbay

It took me a few more days then I expected, and bare with me because my caps locks key has come off and i havent got around to fixing it so i will probably be very grammatically incorrect, this blog!! stupid caps lock. so last friday night, me and all the girls left for silverbay, new york. its about 4 hours away from here (without traffic). we were originally going to take one minivan but they wouldn't rent to people under 25 so we had to rent two cars instead. so in the best car was me, frannie (driver), steph and sarah and in the other not so best car was alissa, alice (driver), lou and emma. we hit awful traffic going over the tappan zee bridge (very long scary bridge across hudson river) and it ended up taking us about 6 hours in total to get to lake george, where the silverbay ymca is. it was a beautiful area right on the lake, with beautiful trees and brooks and mountains surrounding. it was suppose to rain however we were lucky and didnt get any all weekend. we had stopped for dinner on the way and had many many snacks (i made honey joys and choc crackle mmmm) so we signed in and signed up for our classes. because we were so late (we couldnt go earlier because some of the girl's host parents wouldn't let them off earlier!!) the class we were most hoping for - ice cream making - had filled up. but that was ok, we ended up signing up for mainly the same classes. i did kite making, graphic design (looked at logos and made our own), self defence (no actual moves taught just about safety, blah boring), theatre sports (done it all before), unique games (this one was awesome!) and family games (lots of running around outside, lots of fun!). The first four were done on the saturday, the last two sunday morning. but back to us checking in.... we found out that 5 of us were in 2 ajoining rooms, with one girl across the hall (and the other 2 girls in seperate buildings) but when me and the 2 girls sharing my room got up there...it had other peoples bags in it!! a bunch of german girls original room had been booked, so instead of giving them a new room they gave them ours, so then WE had to be moved!! it was so ridiculous and we had to haul our stuff to a whole new building away from the others. Sarah and I ended up heading to bed at about 230am because we stayed up late talking, so the wake up in the morning was a bitch. breakfast wasn't too bad and then we started the classes. after first two was lunch, then another two, then a large period of free time. we all decided to hit the kayaks on the lake...i went in a double one with frannie and it was the first time i have ever done any water sports, so i was so excited. we kayaked from one side of the lake to the other - thats 3 miles!!!! (about 4.8kms) so i was so excited and proud. it was lots of fun and i would love to do it again. then the night activities began - a pantomime where they got random aupairs to jump up on stage and join in (this was hilarious!) then a great game of pictionary and charades where I (well prob all the aussies) hurt my throat screaming so much! after this was free ice cream and then a disco. the disco was pretty good considering. we all sat on the porch after and sung aussie songs and played what would you rather; then once we split up to our rooms, sarah and i ended up sitting outside (not sure what time maybe midnight??) just about to go in, when an american guy who had been in a wedding they had at the same venue, same time, came over to chat to us. he ended up being really nice and we went up to his room for a few beers with him, and some other american guys/girls. there was one guy who had been to australia, on uni exchange in sydney. we ended up getting to bed at 430 and having to wake up 3 hours later!!! needless to say the next day i was ridiculously tired, but we had two classes (each class over the weekend went for about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs) of games so that perked me up a bit. after that was dismissal, so we had some lunch and got on the road. we took our time getting home but there wasnt as much traffic so it took about the 4hours. we stopped in at an outlet shopping store on the way, and once we got back home, we dropped lou off and then all headed back out to the movies (yes we are masochists running on no sleep) to see 'the proposal' (so sad so funny) then i think my head finally hit the pillow at 1am?

overall it was a fantastic weekend, great getaway with the girls and easy quick way to do our credit points. that took care of 3, and i need to do 6 in all so most of the girls also have 3 left, so we are thinking of going back to silverbay in september.

my family has left for rhode island to visit eileen's brother, so i had this afternoon (thurs) off and tomorrow as well as my usual weekend. i only found out this week, so i didnt make any get away plans, but thats ok because there is already plans here in town and in the city for sat/sun. i was going to go into the city tomorrow but i might just have a relaxing day because i been working so much and i need to do my silverbay assignments too (5 pages about myself, 5 pages about anything american).

Quick Catch Up...

So the last 2 weeks I haven't written blogs, normally I do them Monday/Tuesday night about the weekends that have just passed, but not a whole lot went on for a huge blog. The first weekend, the girls and I stayed in town to save some money - did some awesome tye dying of pillowcases and underwear and went to dinner at Outback Steakhouse. The following weekend a few of us had dinner friday night, then on saturday we took Alissa to hospital as she got a skin infection :( Alice stayed with her during the days, as I had already plans to meet a friend in the city. So I went into the city to meet a friend Kate (from NZ and went to the training school with me, who is on her 3rd fam but now lives bout 15 mins away from me) for lunch and a bit of shopping, and took Frannie with me. Then Frannie & I visited Alissa in the hospital for the night. Next day all the girls went back to spend the morning/lunch with her, keeping her company then we went shopping and to see 'The Hangover' (which is ridiculously hilarious!!) and out for dinner.

So not all that much happened, nice to save a bit of money and have some breezy weekend. Alissa is okay now, we are all so glad. This weekend that just passed, we went to silverbay but I am going to post that in another blog either tonight or tomorrow night, when i get more time.

For a reason...

I am definitly one of those people that believe things happen for a reason. I am not sure if EVERYTHING happens for a reason, but definitly certain things. When I was told I had to leave my Philadephia family, I was a mess of emotions - devastated, scared, confused, shocked. But that turn of event, sparked the beginning of literally one of the best times of my life. Some coincidences I can buy, but some are definitly and completely unbelievable. Honestly, what are the chances of stumbling upon an amazing group of not 1, not 2, but 5 awesome Australian girls and one german-come-aussie!! To click with 6 other girls, who are hilariously funny, sweet, fun and supportive, is something that doesn't come along everyday. Part of our connection is that yes, we are all aussies, but that part doesn't run as deep as the fact that they are all amazing people and have becoming amazing friends. And our timing runs so well, that only 1 girl is left "alone" and its only for a short time! We enjoy similar things, but its no big deal if someone isn't interested. We try to include everyone, but everyone is still open to compromise. We give each other headaches by laughing so hard. Whenever I need advice, or to vent, or support these girls are always here for me. I can not simply believe that this is a coincidence (especially considering they are all convinently located within ten minutesof me, and thirty minutes of my dream city)...I definitly think it all happened for a reason; and I am so lucky to be having such an utterly amazing year!

The Girls...

Alissa, hails from NSW near Lismore, and along with her best friend Alice, is one of the two girls I first met who without question came and picked me up, my first friday night here, and stuck by my side ever since! Alissa is hilarious (actually you'll find I say this about all the girls...its true!) and her laugh is contagious and hilarious in itself. She is such a strong woman and a brilliant leader and what I respect about her most is that she has high morals and religious integrity, but is never hypocritical or judgmental.

Alice, from Lismore (so glad these two girls will be so close to me when I go back home!) is one of those ridiculously nice and compassionate people, who is always looking out for others and trying to find the best in people; making sure no one gets left out or left behind! She is funny, sweet and generous.

Lou, from Sydney, although all the girls are hilarious, Lou is definitly the comedian! I am absolutely in love with this girls sense of style; and damn her she is always photogenic! Lou has so much respect and love for her host family, it really reflects the kind of person she is. She makes sure she has quality time with them everyweek, and she always makes time for herself, something I wish I remembered to do more often! I am so sad that Lou will be moving to Boston in a few weeks, for the rest of her time here, but thankful that it is only 4 hours away!

Frannie, our honourary Aussie, from Germany, is freaking awesome! She is just as crazy and wild as me (and the rest of the girls) and surprisingly she can keep up with my million-thoughts-and-words-per-minute brain (better then some people back home actually haha). She is effortlessly cool, and fun, and confident...one of those girls who everyone wants to be her best friend! She is intelligant and offers great advice, she deals with everything on her plate remarkably well.

Sarah, from central coast, has got the biggest and most constant smile I have ever seen! Its infectious and lovable, and she is always laughing or making me laugh - such a fun girl to be around! She stands up for herself and won't be walked on. She knows how to have fun and entertain others, but at the same time she is a great listener and so supportive.

Steph, also central coast girl, our latest member to arrive, it feels like she has been here all along. Shes sarcastic, shes strong, shes hilarious but most of all compassionate and understanding. She adds some fiestiness too the mix and a wholllle lot of fun!! I love that we are both hags, its great to have that in common, hehe, it means she always gets my jokes haha!!

So thats my lovely ladies, my home away from home, my little new york australia!
I wouldn't get through the weeks without them, and the weekends wouldn't be nearly as much fun if they weren't there!

While I'm on this sentimental turn (so rare for me, haa :P) I would have to say that I am overwhelmed sometimes but the amount of support from back home. One of my biggest reservations was that I would arrive here and people back home would get so tangled up in their lives that they wouldn't have much time for me, and then when I would return home I would find that I had missed out on so much! That is without a doubt NOT the case! While there have unfortunately been some people I haven't heard of (Jade & Beau, for various reasons), pretty much everybody has been amazing. Weeklyish emails from mum, dad, jessica and even jason! Skype chats with them every now and then, and plenty of photo comments from the lovely chut chut. Thanks to the marvels of facebook and email, I've been able to talk to Kristy and Toni, about as much as I did back home, which is great!! Frequent texts and not so frequent calls with Brock, long emails and short facebook comments with Krystle (and damn it one day a skype date haha). But of course (as back home) I would be cowering in the corner, rocking back and forward if it weren't for Renee :) The first few months, even though I couldn't talk to her online, and our phone calls were unfortunately few and far between, I still had her with me. When I needed help, advice, support or a laugh, instead of hearing my own inner voice, or concious I heard a little Renee saying, "Amanda...what would I say if i was there? No no not carnival...what else would I say? Yes, there you go, exactly!" and it always guided me through. Now, thank god she has internet, and I can hear (well not technically) her actual voice, and advice, and jokes, and sillyness, and seriousness, and wisdom. She is my rock (and my owl ;) ..) and my best friend, and I miss her dearly.
Love you all, time for this sentimental shmuck to shutup lol.xoxox
